Joe Kelly, AIA, NCARB

Joe Kelly, AIA, NCARB is a lifelong Florida resident who grew up in Treasure Island, Florida – 40 minutes North of Sarasota. Since his birth, he has been surrounded by creativity, art, and design. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida from a graphic designer father, and mother who single handedly managed numerous successful real estate investments for overseas clients, Joe used to spend hours in his dad’s design studio, watching him draw, mix colors, paint, design logos, and develop countless corporate identities. Joe and his father also shared the common passion for designing and racing cars. They built their own sprint and enduro Karts from the ground up that they raced locally and nationally across the country, winning multiple championships throughout his racing career. As a teenager, Joe was introduced to architecture by his best friend’s father, a local residential architect, that sparked his interest in building design and the built environment.

Joe received his Bachelor of Design Degree with honors in 2001 and went on to earn a Master of Architecture Degree with high honors in 2003. Throughout his 6 years at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Joe received numerous design awards and scholarships. Most notably, he received a Design Achievement Award in 2001 for his first year graduate design studio sequence, an Academic Excellence Award for a graduate thesis project in 2002, and was a nominee for the SOM Traveling Fellowship.

Professionally, Joe began his career working for Guy Peterson, FAIA in 2004, where he served as Project Architect on numerous award winning residential projects. Over the next 12 years, he specialized in coastal houses and state permitting, and has completed projects on Longboat Key, Lido Shores, Siesta Key, Casey Key, and Palm Island. Joe left his position in 2016 to launch and serve as Principal Architect at Hive Architects Inc.
