Gwen Leroy-Kelly, AIA, was born and raised in France, before moving to Florida at the age of 19 to learn English at St. Petersburg College, attending the English as Second Language Program. She then enrolled in the pre-veterinarian program where she met Joe Kelly, when they were partners in Chemistry Lab. After obtaining their Associate of Arts degrees, they both relocated to Gainesville to enroll in the College of Design, Construction, and Planning at the University of Florida. Gwen went on to receive the International Student Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement by an International Student and the Harvard Jolly Clees Toppe Scholarship – endowed Scholarship for incoming graduate student. Gwen received her Master of Architecture degree with high Honors from the University of Florida in 2003.
Gwen joined Sweet-Sparkman Architects in 2005 located in Sarasota, Florida where the focus of her work was public and private commercial projects. She worked as a Project Manager for many municipal projects that included Sarasota County Beach Pavilions such as Casperson Beach and South Lido Park, Fire Station No. 12 on Bee Ridge Road and Fire Station No.17 on Desoto Road near The Mall at UTC, the Selby Library Teen Center, and the Ringling College of Art and Design’s new Library on MLK Blvd. She also served as Associate Director for AIA Gulf Coast Chapter in 2006.
In 2016, after 11 successful years at Sweet-Sparkman Architects, Gwen joined Joe Kelly, AIA at Hive Architects Inc. to serve as a Principal and Partner. With her commercial background and expertise, she is broadening the firm’s experience level, which allows Hive Architects to pursue a broader range of commissions. Combined, Joe and Gwen have many years of professional experience in architectural practice, including residential architecture, coastal houses and state permitting, historic preservation, and private, civic, and commercial projects.
